Jane Franklin Dance: Beauty and the Beat
Originally created for Capital Fringe Festival 2018 and 'back by popular demand' at Theatre on the Run in Arlington, Beauty and the Beat is sure to kick up recollections of neighbors, roommates, landlords or lane-changing experiences of vying for a parking space.
A leftover interaction haunts you. Oddly, you recall the incident, though it was a mere blip, tiny gasp. The beauty of the moment has a life of its own like a disaster waiting to happen should a tree fall over!
Physical and fun, Beauty and the Beat is about presumptions that go way off course. You wonder about the guy who lives next door. Inspired by Tom Waits song “What’s He Building in There,” scenarios emerge of nosy neighbors jumping to big conclusions. After all, you are neighbors, you hardly know each other. For example, your neighbor comes to the door, “and tells you to cut off the branches of your tree that hangs over his fence because of dropping pine needles and the disaster waiting to happen should the tree fall over! It makes a big impression.”
Text: developed by Jane Franklin inspired by true events and other text drawn from Tom Waits “What’s He Building in There?” Mister Rogers quotes from a remixed version by John D. Boswell for PBS Digital Studios.
